Congratulations to all Groups and Units who grew in the last year, you know who you are!

Scouting in the NE Region has grown again with a 2.1% increase in 2014, with increases in all 5 sections!  This is continuous growth for the last 5 years.

Over the last 14 years we have grown by over 1500, giving our current membership of 5913.

Section figures are as follows:

  • Beavers – 1316 (+4.7%)
  • Cubs – 1637 (+2.4%)
  • Scouts – 1462 (+0.7%)
  • Explorers – 486 (+2.3%)
  • Network – 30 (+11.1%)
  • Adults – 982 (-0.3%)

Of the Districts, I would like to highlight the increase Aberdeen District had in the last year, up 115 members from the census in 2013. Well done to all involved in Aberdeen District!  The challenge is now on for us all to beat these figures next year!

Two areas where we need to concentrate on are female youth membership and retention into Explorers and Network.

While the trend of female youth members does continue to increase, girls only make up 14% of our youth membership.  This figure should be much closer to 50%.  Are we not getting the message out to the general public that scouting is open to all or are there groups still not actively welcoming female members into Scouting?

Looking at the Explorer numbers, we are either losing members in Scouts or we are not providing enough opportunities for Explorers in the Region. What do you think we can do to improve the transition between Scouts & Explorers?

We will get more statistical numbers on the age profiles in the coming months & I hope to be able to share the salient points with you all.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on what we can do to address these issues! Tweet us @NEScouts or speak to Dougie at rc@scouts-northeastscotland.org.uk
