North East Scouts from Kenmay to head off on an Antarctic Adventure

Two Scouts from Kenmay have been selected to recreate Ernest Shackleton’s 1921 Quest Expedition to Antarctica, 100 years after it took place.

In two years’ time, Emma Johnston (21) and Sam Payne (21) will represent Scotland as they follow in the footsteps of two Aberdeen Scouts, James Marr and N.E Mooney who took part in the original expedition in 1921, when they take part in ReQuest2021.

The ReQuest2021 team is made up of 10 Scouts from the UK, including Emma and Sam, who will sail from Ushuaia in Argentina to Antarctica. The will sail in the Bark Europa, a hundred-year-old sailing vessel and the only tall enough ship with permission to enter Antarctic waters.

When they are there, they will carry out their own individual Antarctic research projects. Emma’s project will create books for adults and children based on Shackleton’s expedition and using her own experiences to relate to it.

While Sam aims to study the microplastic content in the water, using oceanographic charts to try and determine a possible origin location.  This showcases how Scouts in the North East of Scotland are preparing young people with the skills for life by giving them opportunities to attend international events and beyond.

Emma said ‘I feel a great sense of pride about going on this amazing trip, representing my Region and Scouts Scotland in somewhere so beautiful’.

With Sam adding that ‘I am very excited to have been selected and looking forward to a new adventure and for representing the North East of Scotland’

There was fierce competition for the spots. Speaking after the selection, Regional Commissioner Dougie Simmers commented:

This is truly an opportunity of a lifetime. Emma and Sam are inspirational young adults for all Scouts. Shackleton was a leader, here’s two young Scouts from the North East of Scotland following in his footsteps.  The skills they have already gained in the Scouts, like resilience and teamwork, will set them up for this awe-inspiring adventure truly giving them the skills for life.

Over the next two years Emma and Sam both require to raise £10,000 each to fund their trip, you can support them and find out more by visiting Sam’s fundraising Facebook page @sampaynerequest and Emma’s fundraising page
